Venezuelan soprano brings queer glamour to historical performance practice.
Higher than a countertenor, rarer than a six in the lottery – the Venezuelan Samuel Mariño is a sopranist, a male soprano. With his ethereal voice, he conquers the repertoire of great heroes of opera, for whom Georg Friedrich Händel alone composed many bravura arias. But it is not only Mariño's extravagant outfits, which defy gender norms, that provide special colors; the accompanying ensemble also contributes: The versatile original-instrument ensemble Capella Cracoviensis, under the direction of Jan Tomasz Adamus, enriches the temples of industrial culture with the sound of historical instruments.
