In spring 2025, the Kunstpalast will dedicate a comprehensive exhibition to the diverse notions of what it means to have, become, or be a mother.
The focus is on societal expectations that have always influenced motherhood and which have manifested in art, culture, and everyday life. Through around 120 works from the 14th century to the present, a panorama unfolds that concerns everyone, including fathers and those without children.
The spectrum of the exhibition includes, in addition to painting and sculpture, video installations and photography, also everyday objects as well as music and commercial imagery. Connections between the works reveal continuities, but also the transformability of maternal images, which are repeatedly appropriated, reinterpreted, contested, and celebrated.
