Zamus 2025: Heavenly Bodies with the Ensemble Hourglass

28.05.2025
Location
Ventana
Inspired by the idea of "spherical music," the ensemble Hourglass combines Renaissance music and contemporary works into a heavenly sound sphere.

According to the theory of Pythagoras, the distances of the overtones on a string correspond to the planetary distances in the universe. The Renaissance developed the idea of spherical harmonies from this, according to which the movements of the planets in the universe produce divine sounds. These harmonies could be emulated through music on Earth, thereby establishing a physical connection to the universe. Inspired by the idea of "spherical music," the ensemble Hourglass now combines music from the Renaissance and contemporary works into such a heavenly sound sphere. It invites the audience to enter a concentrated and meditative state so that the effect of the music can unfold throughout the entire body. Furthermore, the program explores historical microtonality through sonically provocative Renaissance compositions. It culminates in a new spiral-shaped work composed for Hourglass. It illuminates the fusion of the audible and the physically perceptible in polyphonic music.

Students of KISD – Cologne International School of Design are designing the stage set and concert experience.

The concert will be recorded by WDR3.

On the same evening, the concert by focus baroque "La chemise blanche | From the French royal court to modern Estonia" will take place from 7 to 8 PM at VENTANA. Combination tickets for both events are available.
