An evening about one of the most fascinating chosen families in music history: Clara and Robert Schumann and their artistic companion Johannes Brahms were connected by more than music – deep friendship, love, and mutual respect characterized their relationship.
Starting from Robert Schumann's last years in the psychiatric clinic in Endenich near Bonn, the actors Rainer Bock and Stephan Szász guide us through the emotional correspondence of the trio. The texts reveal moments of trust and affection – but also the darker sides: Schumann's fear of himself, his doubts, his illness.
The second part of the evening is dedicated to a literary work that strongly influenced Schumann: E. T. A. Hoffmann's "Life Views of the Tomcat Murr" – a novel fragment that parodies bourgeois conventions while celebrating and questioning the romantic spirit of life. Hoffmann's text served as inspiration for Schumann's piano cycle "Kreisleriana".
Once again, Rainer Bock and Stephan Szász read – accompanied by the Boulanger Trio, which plays works by Robert Schumann.
Against the backdrop of the Rittergut Hornoldendorf near Detmold – later chosen home of Johannes Brahms – an evening emerges between music and literature, feeling and reflection, genius and doubt.
