Paths through the land: O had I never seen this day!

The actors Bibiana Beglau, Moritz Führmann, Hans Löw, and Stephan Szász read from "King Oedipus," the Greek tragedy by Sophocles. Musical support: Murat Coşkun.

In the Theater im Park in Bad Oeynhausen, we descend into the depths of one of the great texts of Greek antiquity and one of the most tragic family dramas in literary history. In a staged reading, the actors Bibiana Beglau, Moritz Führmann, Hans Löw, and Stephan Szász transport us to Thebes. In "King Oedipus" by Sophocles, translated by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, the fate of this cursed family unfolds before our eyes and ears.

The percussionist Murat Coşkun will capture the oppressive atmosphere of Greek tragedy with percussion instruments. He also musically moves with his partly historical instruments at the interface between East and West, that is, precisely that classical-Hellenistic space that has already captivated us literarily. And with the atmospheric depth of his drumming, he manages to lead us into the marshy fields of England.

Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The Fall of the House of Usher," this masterpiece of horror and Gothic literature, unmistakably illustrates how a family can bring about its own ruin. Together with Bibiana Beglau and Hans Löw, we accompany the narrator into the world of the declining English country gentry and become witnesses to ghostly mysteries, murder, and betrayal amid ancient walls.
