"Shifting": An exhibition of the Julia Stoschek Foundation at the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus

24.04.2025 - 30.04.2025
The Julia Stoschek Foundation presents the exhibition "Shifting" in the foyer of the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus. Curated by Lou von der Heyde, the exhibition brings together works by Eli Coplan, Courtesy, Tarren Johnson & Joel Cocks, Klein, Lila-Zoé Krauß, Christelle Oyiri, PRICE, Emma Rosenzweig, and Wael Shawky.

“Shifting” brings central questions of our present into focus: How do media shape our self-image? And what stories do bodies tell in the digital space? The works draw on elements from theater and opera and enter into a dialogue with the architecture of the Schauspielhaus. Between intimacy and spectacle, club culture and stage, self-perception and staging, the artists weave experimental soundscapes with cinematic fragments.

Accompanying the exhibition, a reading will take place on April 26, 2025, featuring Olga Hohmann, Jan Koslowski, James Massiah, and Emma Rosenzweig. The authors will present their own texts, in which they address the themes of the exhibition and relate to the works on display.

“Shifting” marks the beginning of the multi-part project “The Time That Remains,” with which the Julia Stoschek Foundation presents time-based media art in the public space of Düsseldorf during the year-long renovation of its headquarters. The series is dedicated to the origins, breaks, and continuities of video art in North Rhine-Westphalia – a region that has played a central role in the development of video art since the 1960s.
