German-language premiere: Lily Sykes has staged Kae Tempest's play after Philoctetes by Sophocles for Münster, in which she perfectly manages to maintain the balance between ancient myth and contemporary war drama.
Heiner Müller has already titled Sophocles' rarely performed tragedy "Philoctetes". For him, it became a cold, almost mathematically constructed lesson on power and manipulation. Kae Tempest takes a different approach with the new edition of this episode from the Trojan War. Even with Kae, the cynical strategist Odysseus and his young companion Neoptolemus want to bring the famous warrior Philoctetes, whom Odysseus once abandoned on a barren island due to a serious injury, to the front. But on the island, they encounter not only him but also a group of women who have fled before the war. The director Lily Sykes perfectly maintains the balance between ancient myth and contemporary flight and war drama in her production.
