Molière's play is a refined game of appearance and reality. The production by Martin Laberenz for the Bonn Theater pushes this confusion to the extreme in order to illuminate the absurd depths through comedic play.
Amphitryon's servant Sosias appears on stage five times. Each time the scene repeats, only the performers change. The entire ensemble plays Sosias and later all the other roles. They all try to be servants and military leaders, as God Jupiter and as the misled wife.
Thus, on one hand, the highly comical plight of the characters grows. No one knows anymore who they are, everyone despairs in a world where the powerful can seize everything. On the other hand, director Martin Laberenz achieves a subtle modernization through the multiplication of characters. The ever-escalating confusions also refer to our digital reality, where everyone has far more than just one identity.
