Dominikus Böhm (1880-1955), his son Gottfried Böhm (1920-2021) and his sons Paul (born 1959), Peter (born 1954) and Stephan (born 1950) Böhm form the German architect dynasty since the end of World War II. The family is particularly known for iconic church buildings. But the Böhms have also designed residential quarters, administrative and event buildings. Additionally, the Central Mosque in Cologne, inaugurated in 2018.
Esch has photographed the work over two decades and is now showcasing around 50 selected images in Essen. The exhibition location could hardly be more fitting: the venue is the Holy Spirit Church in Essen. The first drafts for this building in the northern part of Essen come from Dominikus Böhm, with the foundation stone laid in 1956. After the death of his father, Gottfried Böhm completed this project, and the Holy Spirit Church was consecrated in 1957 and placed under monument protection in 2019. The last service took place there in 2020, and in 2024 it was desacralized and transformed into an exhibition space for art and cultural center. Recently, the art space Holy Spirit opened at the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein.
A new book is now being published with almost 100 of Esch's Böhm images – details, views, architectural environments, unusual perspectives. It is the second book from his project series "The Architectural View."
