His compositions bring Eastern spirituality into Western concert halls. The music is reduced to its essence. Due to his modernity and his religiosity, which were deemed non-conformist, Pärt was pushed out of his Estonian homeland by the Soviet authorities in 1980 – he only returned in 2008. At the center of the evening is his work "Stabat Mater". It sets to music the suffering of the mother of Jesus in a moving way – a challenge for the singers.
At the stART festival, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, conducted by Tõnu Kaljuste, presents works by Arvo Pärt and Georg Friedrich Handel.
