Right in the founding year of her company, the choreographer Sasha Waltz, who had just been honored with the German Dance Prize, had her international breakthrough. With her first full-length piece, “Travelogue I – Twenty to eight.” Just one month after its premiere in September 1993, this dance sensation was already being experienced at the Theater im Pumpenhaus. It captivated with a completely unusual, surprising language of movement.
On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the theater, the house is now returning to its origins with Sasha Waltz & Guests. Today, “Twenty to Eight” is cult: social behavioral psychology in slapstick style. With a new generation of dancers, the successful choreographer proves that her iconic production has lost none of its wit and relevance even after more than three decades. A surreal distorted everyday life unfolds with objects that have a mind of their own: The ironically pointed everyday stories in the kitchen, living room, hotel room, and bar hit the nerve of the zeitgeist: witty-absurd, almost acrobatic style, contemporary themes – Sasha Waltz was considered the most exciting up-and-coming avant-gardist far and wide. Today she is an international star, based in Berlin, and enjoys choreographing in prominent architectures.
