In the 90s, when they shaped the sound of the Hamburger Schule, scruffy punk and garage sound were their métier. Today, it is more of a restrained, sometimes ethereal indie guitar pop. But one thing has remained the same with Tocotronic: The band around singer Dirk von Lowtzow delivers album after album stories and statements, sentences and everyday observations that burn into the brain (“I want to be part of a youth movement”). On their new record, they sing about the “Golden Years” and take the breath away from racists with kisses. Once again, great lyrics. Also live.
