Sustainability is the major theme for the Bundeskunsthalle in 2025. This is already becoming apparent before the turn of the year. In the exhibition "Save Land," the focus is on the question of ecological restoration of land.

Over 70 percent of the Earth's surface is covered by water. The rest is our habitat: the land areas of the Earth. This interdisciplinary exhibition focuses on them, their destruction, their protection, and their restoration, where natural sciences and social politics, cultural history, and contemporary art meet. It was created in close cooperation with the UN desertification secretariat UNCCD (United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification) based in Bonn. Its aim is to emotionally engage the public and raise awareness for this important issue. Because land continues to be sealed, cleared, and consumed. Each year, 100 million hectares of healthy and productive soils are destroyed – an area about three times the size of Germany.

The projection on the floor shines a lush green. But as soon as you step onto an area called "monocultures," everything takes on a yellow color that looks far from healthy. Humans are destroying the earth's soils – everyone knows that. But it's not just about highlighting problems. The exhibition approaches the topic from all sides. It looks back into the history of land appropriation with old surveying instruments. It shows developments by presenting statistical surveys. A digital globe can be explored, and a soil profile makes clear what lies beneath the asphalt coverings of our big cities: slag, rubble, and garbage. However, the dark visions of the future do not take center stage. Rather, the exhibition seems to strive to inspire action for the common cause.
