Sometimes fate has its way. The renowned director Peter Konwitschny had never staged Richard Wagner's "Ring of the Nibelungen" as a cycle. This strange deficiency was seized upon by Heribert Germes, the artistic director of the Dortmund Opera, who convinced Konwitschny that Dortmund was actually the only true place to produce a complete "Ring." Konwitschny agreed, not anticipating that the Corona pandemic would require many original plans and schedules to be readjusted.
Thus, the "Ring" does not appear in the original chronological narrative sequence. The "Rheingold" now follows within the cycle, where all the fundamental conflicts of the tetralogy are laid out. How does Konwitschny handle this? One can speculate, predict, bet… It is certain that Gabriel Feltz takes on the musical responsibility.
