first and further steps: ZOE – "Femina Saga – Genesis"

26.04.2025
The performance artist Marie-Zoe Buchholz alias ZOE dedicates herself to the tension between the image of the witch and that of the mother as narratives of female life realities. It is also about the instrumentalization of bodies.

With the new production, which premiered in September 2024 at tanzhaus NRW, Düsseldorf, ZOE connects to the piece "Femina Saga – a ritual journey" from 2020. Here she already spoke about the archetype of the witch, questioned the reasons for her persecution, and how her story is reproduced in the present. From matriarchy to myths to spaces for modern magic – in the next chapter of the "Femina Saga", the performance once again takes the audience on a journey between fact and fiction, pain and ecstasy, persecution and rehabilitation.

ZOE is a performance artist and curator. Characteristic of her artistic practice is an interdisciplinary storytelling that draws from elements of Voguing and Ballroom, Physical Theatre, Spoken Word, and Vocal Music. She belongs to the first generation of Voguing performers in Germany and is considered one of the leading figures for Ballroom Culture in the German-speaking region. She produces both her own works and cultural formats with the collective Shapes & Shades, which she co-founded in 2021, to promote Ballroom Culture in NRW. In 2021, ZOE was also appointed to the ethics commission of the umbrella organization of dance.

Afterwards, artists' talk with Marie-Zoe Buchholz alias ZOE.
