Cornelia Baltes exhibition "Tilt"

11.05.2025 - 08.06.2025
Cornelia Baltes has combined canvas paintings with large-scale murals for an extraordinary exhibition space, the Fuhrwerkswaage.

The works of Cornelia Baltes navigate the boundaries of abstraction and figuration. Simple shapes, colored surfaces, some with gradients, and broad black lines are characteristics of her painting. She finds her motifs in the everyday, such as body parts and clothing.

A distinctive feature is her combined presentations of colored surfaces directly applied to the wall and canvas paintings. Such a multifaceted constellation has now been developed for the Fuhrwerkswaage. Partially extending high under the ceiling, sharply contoured color forms correspond to eight framed images of different sizes, serving both as their stage and as an overwhelming competition.

The exhibition at the Fuhrwerkswaage Cologne transforms the space into a large-scale, walk-in painting that dissolves the boundaries between wall, floor, and image. Painting is to be liberated from its classical role as a representation and static object, and instead staged as a living subject in space. This creates a dynamic interplay of painting, sculpture, and space installation, where the exhibition space itself becomes a lively actor.
