With hiking boots or bicycle on the traces of Widukind: A historical-literary afternoon in Enger – with texts, music, and stories around the myth and reality of the Saxon duke.

Embedded in the gentle hills of the Ravensberger landscape, near the Teutoburg Forest and Wiehen Mountains, lies Enger – the place where the legendary Saxon Duke Widukind is said to have once lived. Here begins our (cycling) hike, at Mey's Deele, a traditional farm with history dating back to the 14th century.

Actress Katja Danowski opens with readings from historical sources about Widukind – that legendary military leader who made history as the adversary of Charlemagne. Dr. Olav Heinemann, director of the Widukind Museum Enger, contextualizes the historical background and provides insights into the life and impact of this charismatic leader.

Afterwards, it's out into the region: Two groups – one on foot, one by bike – set out to search for traces. Stops include the historical Sattelmeier farms, once legendary residences of the companions of Widukind. The local heritage association Enger guides through the agricultural monuments and their history.

In the Enger collegiate church, where the presumed grave of Widukind is located, Katja Danowski reads a historical text about the transfer of his bones – once again, legend and historical interpretation meet.

To conclude, everyone gathers again under the chestnut tree of Mey’s Deele. Here, Katja Danowski reads from the Arthurian saga, while Dr. Heinemann highlights parallels to the Widukind legend. Accompanied by flute and cello, the afternoon ends atmospherically between narration, history, and landscape.
