Zamus 2025: Marsyas Baroque and Martí Corbera

21.05.2025
Location
Alte Feuerwache
At the Zamus Festival for Early Music, sound and movement spaces are opened up in the Old Fire Station Cologne. For this, the dancer and choreographer Martí Corbera brings together Flamenco and Baroque music.

The Polish Crown Prince Sigismund, thrown into the dungeon by his father as a child due to a dark prophecy, learns about the world exclusively from the descriptions of his teacher. When his father then tests him as a young man and equips him with all the means and comforts of power, Sigismund reacts with a violent ecstasy that leads to murder and attempted rape. Once again thrust back into the solitude of the dungeon, the prince reflects on his fateful actions. And undergoes a purification.

This parable about the destiny of human existence is presented by the great Spanish dramatist Pedro Calderón de la Barca in his verse play "La vida es sueño" ("Life is a Dream"). In excerpts from the text and symbiotic sound and movement spaces, the dancer and choreographer Martí Corbera interprets it together with the German-Spanish ensemble Marsyas Baroque, intertwining Baroque music and Flamenco dance.
