Burghart Klaußner as King Lear

With "King Lear," director Evgeny Titov concludes his Shakespeare trilogy at the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus.

In his productions of "Macbeth" and "Richard III", Evgeny Titov has cast a very individual perspective on Shakespeare's monsters of power. Both appeared like big, cruel, yet innocent children who just did not understand that people are not toys. This character trait is also embodied by the old King Lear.

In his decision to gift his kingdom to his daughters while simultaneously demanding their unconditional love, there lies a naive despotism and at the same time a frightening naivety. The consequences of Lear's actions are almost more catastrophic and destructive than in the other two plays. Thus, Titov's trilogy also serves as a warning about humanity's tendency to plunge themselves and the world into destruction.
