Opened in late May 2001 in the former Linden Brewery, it is widely visible by its 52-meter chimney rising into the sky, on which a light installation by Mario Merz is located. An area of a total of 2,400 m² offers unusual exhibition spaces for light art, which today counts as an independent genre alongside painting, sculpture, or photography. The labyrinthine corridors, cool rooms, and fermentation tanks of the former brewing site, where the traditional Linden-Adler Pils was brewed between 1852 and 1979, are artistically staged and transformed into new horizons of meaning.
In addition to the presentation of ambitious permanent and temporary exhibitions, the house sees itself as a forum for discussions, symposiums, conferences, and workshops on the subject of light. Numerous internationally renowned light artists have established permanent installations specifically created for the vaulted cellar: Mario Merz, Joseph Kosuth, James Turrell, Mischa Kuball, Rebecca Horn, Christina Kubisch, Johannes Dinnebier, Keith Sonnier, Jan van Munster, François Morellet, Christian Boltanski, and Olafur Eliasson.
