Around 370 performances are staged by the ensemble per season, with nearly a third taking place off-site. The "wandering" theater work is not limited to North Rhine-Westphalia; in individual cases – as is customary with WLT – there are detours to Hesse, Saarland, Baden-Württemberg, Luxembourg or Switzerland. With their open-air stage accommodating 500 seats, the Castrop-Rauxeler perform particularly in stadiums, castle parks, or on former coal dumps throughout North Rhine-Westphalia during the summer months. In their hometown, they celebrate the WLT Open-Air Theater Festival every year in the marketplace of the old town under the motto "Stage out…! Theater in the Open Air".
Since 1946, the Westphalian State Theater has been located in the heart of the Ruhr area. It was one of the first stages in the post-war years to travel again with guest performances through the cities. Founded in 1933, the WLT originally had its headquarters in Paderborn, but lost its venue there during the war years. Today, the WLT performs in Castrop-Rauxel on two stages: in the town hall (570 seats) and in the WLT Studio (95 seats). The productions of the state theater include not only theatrical performances but also musical projects as well as plays for children and young people and theater for kindergartens and classrooms. Since 1977, the WLT has had a division of children's and youth theater with its own ensemble, its own theater education and dramaturgy, which also offers differentiated framework programs and theater educational support beyond the performance operations.
