In the Portrait: Theater Bielefeld

From the first financial contribution in 1885 to the construction of a theater and concert hall, it took almost twenty years - on April 3, 1904, the Bielefeld Theater was finally able to open with the "Jubilation Overture" by Carl Maria von Weber.

In between was the financing of the building designed by Berlin's Bernhard Sehring. The architect had gained experience during the construction of the "Theater des Westens". With around 200,000 visitors annually and about 550 performances in drama, dance, and musical theater, it has become one of the largest theaters in the region. The three-section house enjoys national attention with its diverse schedule beyond the borders of East Westphalia.

In 2006, it reopened after extensive renovations: Since then, there has been a stage with the latest stage technology for all three sections and an auditorium with a seating capacity of over 650 seats. Under the roof of the municipal theater, there is also the newest venue: the Opera Studio. Here there is room for song evenings and small musical performances. Overall, the Theater Bielefeld has four stages at two locations: At the Alten Markt, in the center of the old town, are the drama stages of the Theater Bielefeld. In the TAM (Theater am Alten Markt) and the smaller TAM ZWEI, classics, rediscoveries, and world premieres are showcased.
