“Out to the museum! Into your collection” in K20

Art
On July 5, 2024, at 7 PM, the K20 will open its new collection presentation, which primarily highlights recent acquisitions from the past few years. Under Susanne Gaensheimer as director, many female and non-Western positions have joined the institution in recent years.

The problem has long been recognized. And the Kunstsammlung NRW has been addressing it for years. With exhibitions and acquisitions, they want to adjust the canon of modernity in Düsseldorf. Finally expanding the image that is dominated by the Western and male perspective. Since Susanne Gaensheimer started as director in Düsseldorf in 2017, more than 100 works by female artists have been acquired – including key works by Etel Adnan, Sonia Delaunay, and Noa Eshkol, Helen Frankenthaler, Isa Genzken, and Marianne Werefkin.

During this time, over 60 works by non-Western artists such as Kader Attia, Cao Fei, Isaac Julien, Zanele Muholi, and Ai Weiwei were added. For the first time, these newcomers are now being prominently showcased. In the new collection presentation, they enter into dialogue with well-known figures in K20 – from Klee to Picasso, from Pollock to Warhol. As additions, there is a digital guide, as well as audio talks and the specially produced soundtrack: "The Sound of the Collection".
