Two grandfathers. Two completely different stories – and one commonality: There was silence about the grandfathers of Brigitte Baetz and Melanie Longerich in their respective families. They know: Baetz's grandfather was a Social Democrat, he lost his job because of it and later fell in the war. Longerich's grandfather was in the SA and the NSDAP, was not conscripted, drank a lot after the war, and was violent. But how did they behave during National Socialism? Were they perpetrators? Were they in the resistance? What kind of people were they?
In the podcast "Yesterday is Now," the two journalists explore their own family history, talk to relatives, and search through photo albums and diaries. They also have conversations with experts from the fields of psychology, history, or social sciences and seek advice for their further approach. In doing so, Baetz and Longerich document their own research and sometimes their failures, for example, in conversations with relatives that are long and friendly but ultimately fruitless. Or in archival research, which simply does not lead anywhere after a certain point.
A new episode of this outcome-open podcast is released every two weeks, which can also help others to explore their family's history. http://gesternistjetzt.de
