From the 2027/28 season, the Hamburg director Nicolas Stemann is set to take over the position of artistic director from Johan Simons. Simons' contract has been extended until then. The 55-year-old Stemann was most recently co-artistic director at the Schauspielhaus Zurich.

Stemann studied directing among other things at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna and has been working as a director since 1995. He has staged productions at all major German-speaking theaters. Regularly, for example, at the Thalia Theater, at the Deutsches Theater Berlin, and at the Salzburg Festival. In addition, he was the house director at the Burgtheater Vienna from 2004 to 2007 and at the Munich Kammerspiele from 2015 to 2019. Until the end of the last season, he led the Schauspielhaus Zurich together with Benjamin von Blomberg. Stemann has been invited to the Berliner Theatertreffen seven times so far, most recently in 2024.

"The Schauspielhaus Bochum stands for a tradition of great artistic experiments full of passion and enthusiasm for theater," Stemann said. He feels honored to step into the beautiful large footsteps of Johan Simons. Simons is also pleased with his successor: "I am sure that he will inspire the audience of the Schauspielhaus Bochum." However, the new director will have to wait a little longer. He can only take up the position in Bochum in the summer of 2007 – Simons will remain until then. The 78-year-old has extended his contract by one year.
