In the Portrait: Archaeological Park

Harbor temple, amphitheater and costume festivals: With the whole family following in the footsteps of the Romans on the Lower Rhine. Colonia Ulpia Traiana was the name of the Roman city that once existed, on whose grounds today the largest archaeological open-air museum in Germany extends.

Entire weekends can be spent here by families, also because many things can be touched and tried out. Just exploring the stairs and vaults in the reconstructed amphitheater is an experience, just like the harbor temple, the city wall, and the Roman inn. The LVR-RömerMuseum, opened in 2008, invites visitors to discover new things from antiquity at 30 interactive stations. Visitors are guided on a bright tour up high under the museum roof – a journey through centuries of Roman history at the Lower Rhine.

The Roman game house, adventure and water playground, as well as the giant bouncing castle (April - October) are additional arguments to entice the younger generation to visit. In addition, there is a wide range of events including guided tours, Roman weekends where one can watch craftsmen at work, verbal excursions and lectures, and the great Roman and craftsmen's festival takes place annually in alternation.
