Opposite the simple Federal Art Hall, Axel Schultes planned his dynamic building for the Bonn Art Museum with waves and curves, with large window areas and irregularly grouped columns. Inside, there is an ambitious, flowing spatial concept – it makes the building, opened in 1992, a model example of new museum architecture. The collection strongly features the Rhineland expressionists. Leading the way is August Macke – the Bonn Museum possesses, alongside Münster, the largest collection of his works in the world. Additionally, there are figures such as Max Ernst, Joseph Beuys, Blinky Palermo, and Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, Georg Baselitz, as well as Imi Knoebel, Andreas Gursky, or Katharina Grosse. All of them document the central importance of German art in Bonn.
