In possession of the Malkasten – and thus autonomously in the hands of the artist – are the Jacobihaus with meeting rooms and an archive, where sources on the history of visual arts are collected and scientifically explored; as well as the modern Hentrich building with a theater hall, artist cellar, restaurant, and bar, which offer a scene address, as well as the park with some buildings. The ensemble is a gem in the city, located next to Schloss Jägerhof, where the Goethe Museum is situated, and the expansive courtyard garden. Particularly the enclosed Jacobigarten is a place of tranquility and contemplation, in accordance with the spirit of Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi, the philosopher, jurist, merchant, and writer, in whose tradition this private park stands. Goethe and Humboldt have already walked here when they visited friend Jacobi at his Pempelfort estate. The artists' association has about 550 members, who elect the board and economic advisory board every two years. Annually in December, members are invited to participate in the exhibition “The Small Format.” Art is also regularly shown in the remaining premises to clarify the significance and function of the Malkasten. Furthermore, one is committed to events addressing art and cultural policy issues, especially when they concern museums, art associations, and galleries.
