In the portrait: Rio Cinema

Until 1995, there was no art house cinema in Mülheim an der Ruhr, then the "Rio" was opened. Back then it was right by the river.

Extremely popular among the residents of Mülheim, the cinema had to cease operations as early as 2007. The majestic building by the water underwent an extensive renovation, and in the municipal bath - modeled after an ancient palazzo - condominiums were created.

After two years of negotiations, the cinema found a new home in the "MedienHaus," where it remains to this day. In addition to current films, the Rio regularly shows older films in thematic series in its 80 seats. Screenings with post-discussions with directors and the annual children's film days in collaboration with cinemas in Oberhausen and Essen complement the program.
