Gelsenkirchen-Ückendorf is transforming from a problematic district into a creative quarter. This is ensured by art projects, cultural workers, and the city, which purchased the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche.
Impressive is it not least because of its size: Over 1000 people can find space in the Heilig-Kreuz-Church. And it is, after many years of vacancy, now being used and needed again. The city has bought the expressionist brick building, which was constructed from 1927 to 1929 according to plans by Josef Franke, to transform it into an event venue.
For almost 100 years, the house of worship was the center of the Catholic community of Ückendorf, and in 2007 it was "decommissioned" by the Diocese of Essen. With a grant of nearly 10 million euros from the state of NRW from the funding program "Strong Neighborhoods - Strong People," the church has transformed into an event hall.
