Who am I? At the Essen Theater, Caner Akdeniz continues his re-vision of classical theater texts with a production of "Peer Gynt".
At the end of his life, Ibsen's fantasist must conclude that he was many things, just not extraordinary. From childhood, he was convinced that he was a chosen one of fate. Nothing could deter him from this belief on his travels through the world, much like through Nordic myths, and that makes him a thoroughly modern figure.
In this respect, it is only consistent that the young director Caner Akdeniz, after Büchner's "Woyzeck" and Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," now turns to this piece of theater history. More than in the other two works, he can hold up a mirror to the audience in which they - and our narcissistically infused age - can recognize themselves.
The premiere will take place in May 2025. An exact date has not yet been announced.
