An experiment supported by the city of Düsseldorf and the state, which has elevated the locally divided free scene between amateur status and (semi-)professional work to another level.
Thanks to organizational concentration and bundled promotion, the FFT has become a center for contemporary forms of performance and expanded the narrowly defined concept of theater: from spoken word, music, and dance theater to performance, video, installation, discourse platform, and history lab. Embedded in a network of comparable institutions in Berlin, Dresden, Frankfurt, and Hamburg. There is no fixed ensemble.
For a year, there was also no own stage anymore. Until the opening in November 2021 at the new location in the former main post office, the FFT operated as a theater without a house. At Konrad-Adenauer-Platz, very close to Düsseldorf main station, the cultural center KAP1 was created during that time, with a central library, theater museum, and the FFT. Now the former two venues of the FFT have been merged into two stages that can be used flexibly, and an open foyer with large windows to the city space.
As a co-producer, the FFT was involved in around 30 projects annually, of which about a third were produced, rehearsed, and premiered at the house. They made up half of the annual total program of nearly 300 performances, with the other half provided by guest performances. The continuously recurring groups included "She She Pop", "Showcase beat Le Mot", or "Norton Commander Productions".
