A "garden with bridges" at the Abteiberg Museum

ArtMönchengladbach
Mönchengladbach has a new place for everyone: A set of walkable sculptures in the garden on the central Abteiberg. They were designed by the New Zealand artist Ruth Buchanan.

A bridge, a ramp, a staircase, and a pavilion are meant to convey a sense of arrival and invite various forms of togetherness in public space. The artist has named the sculptural elements after body parts. The spiral staircase becomes the "spine" that one can climb to reach the raspberry-red "throat," which resembles a footbridge. The "ear" is next to the music school, and the "stomach" becomes a place of encounter with a mini kitchen.

It is the first project of the "New Patrons" in the Rhineland - a network that enables social groups to realize forward-looking artistic projects. The Mönchengladbach ensemble was created on behalf of the team and the visitors of the unemployment center together with students and teachers from the nearby Stiftisches Humanistisches Gymnasium.
