In the Portrait: Aalto Music Theatre

It is one of the most beautiful music theaters in NRW and boasts a prominent architect: It was designed in bold, asymmetrical lines according to the plans of the Finn Alvar Aalto. However, he passed away seven years before construction began.

For the gap between the jury verdict and the city decision in 1959 and the completion in 1988 was almost three decades. The building that also gives home to the Aalto Ballet, with its audience area of about 1100 seats in indigo blue, can present a proud balance sheet: high occupancy rates, a remarkable chorus ensemble, and a wide range of repertoire rarities and well-known pieces. The music theater, which resembles a giant rock depending on the perspective, is located at the Essen Stadtgarten in close proximity to the Philharmonie Essen.

The extraordinary architecture of Aalto can also be experienced virtually on the screen. Through the website, one can access a digital 360-degree tour that allows one to discover the foyer and the auditorium - such as the wave-shaped cloakroom counter, the curved balconies, and the blue and white spectator stands. The Aalto Music Theater thus opens itself up regardless of personal limitations and opening hours. Additionally, during the virtual tour, one can have the construction history and some architectural details explained via audio clips.
