The first Dortmund Comic Prize, endowed with 10,000 euros, goes to the illustrator Hannah Brinkmann. She is awarded for a graphic novel about military service and conflicts of conscience.
The award winner impressed the jury of professionals from the (comic) art and culture scene with a graphic novel that deals with a part of the history of the Federal Republic of Germany – military service. Hannah Brinkmann was born in 1990 in Hamburg. Based on her own family history, she tells the story of the rearmament of the Federal Republic of Germany and the reintroduction of conscription in 1957. Her pacifist uncle Hermann failed the so-called conscientious objection test in 1973. His suffering from what he perceived as a hopeless basic training with the Bundeswehr ultimately led him to suicide.
The award, endowed with 10,000 euros, will now be awarded every two years. More information can be found here.
